Emerald Valley Public School Achieves Sustainable Success with Biogas Utilization

Emerald Valley Public School, situated in Salem, has effectively managed its daily food waste and harnessed renewable energy through the installation of a biogas plant with the support of waste management solutions provider Green Connect.

Since its implementation ten years ago, the biogas plant has revolutionized the schools approach to waste management and energy consumption. A study conducted by GreenConnect revealed that the school generates approximately 75kg of food waste daily. In response to this, Green Connector commended the installation of a bio gas plant capable of converting the organic waste into a sustainable energy source. With a design featuring a permanent civil model digester and a portable FibreReinforced Plastic (FRP) gas holder, the bio gas plant operates on a floating drum gas holder model. The drum rises as the gas is generated and descends as it is consumed, ensuring a consistent and reliable energy supply.

The biogas plant has proven to be a resounding success, producing an estimated 10 cubic meters of biogas per day. This renewable energy source is equivalent to 5kg of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which has replaced conventional fossil fuels in the school kitchen. The switch to biogas not only reduces the institutions carbon footprint but also significantly lowers energy costs, promoting a more sustainable and cost-effective operation.

In addition to biogas production, the plant also yields approximately 150 litres of nutrient-rich manure on a daily basis. This organic fertilizer is put to good use in Emerald Valley Schoolsgardens, enhancing soil fertility and reducing the reliance on chemical-based alternatives.

Beyond the immediate environmental benefits, Emerald Valley School recognizes the educational value of the biogas plant. Students actively participate in its maintenance and are provided with hands-on learning opportunities. Lessons on renewable energy, waste management, and environmental stewardship are incorporated into the curriculum, cultivating a sense of responsibility towards the planet and inspiring innovative thinking among the students.

As Emerald Valley School marks ten years of successful biogas utilization, it stands as a shining example of sustainable practices within the educational sector. By effectively managing food waste, harnessing renewable energy, and educating the next generation, the school is contributing to a greener and more environmentally conscious society.
